Deadman

Well, this is the one that kicks it all off and this is also a damn good book, one could even argue it started a whole genre. A product of its time for sure it still reads like a blockbuster movie, pretty much all out action. Yeah, it's maybe a little far fetched in parts but it introduced me to the characters I would spend 10 of the greatest genre novels with. If you're going to start reading this series, and I recommend you do, it's a good idea to start with with this one.

This was the first VanCook I've read and I have to say that I was really impressed. There's really not too much more that I can say that hasn't already been covered in detail by more learned reviewers than myself. However, this book moved well (and rapidly), the action was hot and I polished this off in no time (a sure sign of a good book for me). As an old(ish) school Bolan fan (#39-#100) coming back into the fold I'll be sure to catch up of some more of Mr VanCook's work, if this is any indication of how he operates then count me in for more!

This was the first major turning point in this excellent series, it is both the best and worst book out of the whole lot. It is the best book because it introduces a fascinating new world for the Rourkes to explore and the worst because the next couple of books (#12 in particular)go on to ruin what could have been a great new direction for the series. Don't get me wrong, read this book, you WILL love it, but as you pick up the novels that follow it you might lament what could have been. I for one would have loved seeing the Rourkes discovering twisted civilisations and exploring the 500 year old ruins. Instead we get something all too familiar... Still, this book has some great moments as JTR makes some life changing decisions and they discover a civilisation that is both interesting and creepy. A great book, that marks the end of an era for this great series.

OK, so it may have a little bit far fetched but this was one entertaining read and from where I stand that's the main thing. This is the first Stony Man I have read (finished it today) and the I've first book I've read by Mr Kasner, suffice to say I will be continuing to read both this series and Mr Kasner's work. Recommended!
