Jackal Hunt

I was not starting this book with high expectations considering the reviews on it, but I was satisfied enough with what it actually delivered. The previous book from this writer, Tiger Stalk, was too action oriented for much of the story to take place. With Jackal Hunt fortunately, the author achieved a balance that works much better, with good storytelling and the right amount of action sprinkled in. Bolan is out to stop an assassination plot against the President of the US. A wide cast of characters are introduced, a network of villains going about their schemes provides much of the meat of the story. Most of the book centers around the Geneva and Brussels areas, the badguys jockeying for position in the scheme and offing each other in the process thereby doing Bolan's work for him in many cases. When it was all said and done, this book turned out to be a decent read, I thought is was worth my while. And one of the main villains seemed to get away at the end, I wondered if the writer had planned to have him come back in a later adventure? That would have been cool.

Ok, let me start this one off... -1 Ok... The first fault... The plot was almost childish. Kill the US President, because he was making too much peace? This is exactly like that James Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies", which has an equally stupid plot. Very similar, actually... -1 The side characters. Johnson was an idiot, and how he became a top CIA official is beyond me. Schindler was cold hearted, but that doesn't mean that she can't have any personality! Luschenska wasn't special or intelligent, really, he just appeared that way because he was surrounded by stupidity (bribing the airport security doesn't make someone a genious!). The Swiss banker was going to die ever since he was first mentioned. I can't beleive he didn't see it coming. -1 Wayyyy to many people being introduced and killed. +1 The writing wasn't that bad. -1 The writer included way too much information about the weapons used. It's obvious that he just went to Google and typed in the weapon name, then wrote down all of the RPM and range statistics on the page. -1 The end was anti-climactic and boring. +1 In spite of everything, it was a quick read and I finished it faster than most Bolans I read. So starting at 5 stars, let's see what it gets now... -5 Brings it down to a 0... Then +2 brings it to a 2 star rating... Sorry Mr. North!

hmm the plot. A council of representatives of some of the most powerful crime groups on the planet have joined together and purchased munition factories worldwide as an investment. yep okay so far (ever heard of land and property guys?) The cold war is over and as a result of pleas by the President of the United States countries worldwide are dropping violence against their enemies and are negotiating with each other. ummm yep okay so sales slump on their investments. What to do ? How can we increase profits the council asks itself. Some bright spark pops up with lets kill the President of the United States that will immediately start massive wars between the negotiating parties who will then buy our weapons and we will make lots of money ;-) Surprise everyone at the table does not agree with this so those that don't are taken out of the room and shot dead. Negotiations then proceed with the assassination group who have already botched previously losing some of their members. Then Mack walks in and takes out the leader of the council. But that doesn't matter as the banker was going to take over anyway? More of the council are killed, who we don't know as by this stage we don't care. Eventually the leader of the asassination group takes out the banker. WHY he had already paid the fee under the threat of a gun. So we have been paid in full so why continue with the contract on the President umm well why not I never really liked him anyway ? Then we plod on until the last couple of pages when Mack saves the President taking out the asassins via a rocket launcher in a massively crowded environment but most of the people in that area had moved toward the arriving President and the few that were in the area sustained minor injuries only and we all live happily ever after. Didn't enjoy this at all and it is not a title I would recommend in the series..

The plot sounded fairly interesting, with the climax being an assasination attempt on the President. The complexities of the plot bogged the book down. Yes, there were a lot of action scenes--some good, some just okay. The woman assassin was a good character, and as short as the climatic scene was, it was pretty decent. But, not a "knock my socks off" sort of book overall.

A fast reading Bolan book....almost too fast at times. The Murder Inc-like group was a neat concept, but wasn't fleshed out as well or thoroughly as it could've been. Too many characters thrown into the mix too quickly at times it seemed. If this one had been made a Super-Bolan and more detail had been added it might've been a more gripping story. As it was it was a so-so Bolan book.

The book was a rather strange one. It had a very interesting plot yet the players in the puzzle were a bit too many making the progress of the story rather confusing sometimes. There was also a new twist in the book in the form of killing off the main villain around the middle of the book. Strange but true!!!! Sadly the book was not as suspenseful as I had hoped for and it was not as great as for example Sudden Death which was also about a planned execution of the American president but in this book the ending was way too short and not the climax one it had been building up to be from the first pages. Yet another book with a lot of potential that yet fails to deliver!!!!!!!!!!! (2003)

took me about 5 minutes to read it. just ejnough time to skim through it and find out how the bad guy dies. not a great book

This is an average Executioner novel. Another story that involves the President. It wasn't really that fun to read. Overall, well, just average.

What was David North thinking? It is obvious that not only has the author never spent any time in a hellzone, but has never even been through Basic Training. For example, A 40mm grenade is a projectile, not a hand grenade. There is no pin, and if you throw it, you may or may not get an explosion, but it certainly will not perform appropriately. This novel is stilted in form and technically horrible. When will Mack Bolan publishers decide to hire real talent?

a good original story. i liked it how he protected the president and every one was out to get him. well worth reading and a great ending.

Basically the only thing really exciting was the assasination attempt. That's the only thing that kept me intrigued until the end. Too many villians to keep track of.

Not as good as Deep Attack and Slaughter Squad, it was still pretty good. There was more info on the villians in this one, and you really got to know their characters real well. The ending was too abrupt IMO, but the action never stopped from beginning to end.

Haven't we read this before? This is a cookie-cutter Executioner effort by North. He sticks to the tried and true Executioner formula but in mostly uninteresting ways. The action scenes are VERY formulaic, and the plot is just boring. In the beginning of the story, there is a meeting of the arms dealing syndicate that is a dreadful and unintentional (I'm sure) parody of the meeting of SPECTRE in "Thunderball". What's that? You're profits are down? Die! You question my authority? Die! How does one find good collaborators these days? Anyway, on Stinkeye's Scale of 1 to 10 (10 being best) i give it a 4. (yawn)

I read about the first 70 pages but couldn't get into it. Flowed really slow and a bit stilted. . .
