Serpents Lair

I loved this book! The yakuza, a ninja-like death cult, and a few 28 Days Later style infected thrown in! After Bolan is betrayed at the beginning, the reader is treated to 220 pages of one long running gun battle. Bolan has to protect the Goth Honey with guns, hands, and martial arts weaponry. Thanks for a great ride, Douglas!

From the opening scene of Bolan getting doublecrossed, this book rarely let up. Nice action scenes of Bolan and Honey on the run, gunning it out with Yakuza, mercs and a death cult. Honey was just right...played well off of Bolan, and the Yakuza thug Bolan befriended was an interesting aspect, also. Another solid outing for Doug.

This was a great addition to the bolan universe courtesy of Doug and his magic. Here is a book that's got it all. Yakuza Gangsters and Mercenaries going up against and then teaming up with Bolan. An ancient and evil cult out to destroy everything in their path and even a goth chick that reminded me of the Suicide Girls website. This was a great story.

Sweet ! All I can say is SHOGUNS ASSASSIN ! That first chapter was awesome ! I was a little afraid it was going to turn into some weird past life thing, but again the author handled it real well . Great characters, great action, great writing, you had the sense of them struggling through that jungle, covered in grime and dirt, soaking wet and shivering. Man, made me feel like I was there . I liked the little truce between factions that seemed to keep switching back and forth and the Yakuza dude with a real sense of honour - and I really liked the young Yakuza who kept getting knocked outta action, I really felt for him . Great story yet it was difficult finis it. Ending was propably best part of the story. Negative things that comes to my mind are: maybe too many factions fighting against each other removes focus from Bolan (even thought he is portrayed well as allways in Dough´s stories) and secondly in story set in Japan I did not got feeling that it really happened in Japan (It could have been generic walley in Bulgaria perhaps). Action was on the spot. Honey & Machida were beliavable, Hogan may be little too "bullet like" and Zakoji as main villain were over shadowed by everything else. Past life episode in prologue some how reminds me of Destroyer series but thats just coincidental. So in my scale of 4-10 I give it 8. Solid work.

Ok, let me start out by saying that this was an amazing book! definitely in my top 5! I'll get onto showing you why... +1 Some great writing here, I got a good sense of where Mack was, and who he was. +1 The side characters were so good! Machida turned out to be a pretty good guy, while Hogan (cool name) turned out to be an Evil, unstable guy. +1 Honey was realistic in the face of danger... Pretty much how I'd see myself acting. She didn't shoot up alot of bad guys, but she also didn't make any dumb mistakes! +1 The setting was great, and I liked how it didn't go all over the world for once. It was easier to follow this way. +1 The plot was simple at first, but got out of hand and messy... In a good way! I liked the scenes with the Mercenary/Yakuza team the best. +1 The end battle scene was great, although I actually prefered the smaller skirmishes along the line. +1 The use of swords and other older weapons. I usually get annoyed with swordfights, but this one was pretty well done, and the power of the sword wasn't overdone in the gun battles. So that brings the mark up to 12 stars! I can only give it 10, of course, but it's really a 12. Great work, I'm expecting great things from Doug's next book! (P.S. this justifies my ratings of some of his previous work! He is a good writer who is capable of writing stuff like this! That's why I can't settle for things like Suicide Highway! Keep it up!)
