Super#2: The Barrabas Sting

This is the second giant SOBs book and sadly the last story from Alan Philipson in the series. The book focus is on plot more than action, and there is a lot going on between the covers. A fictional Island nation is the stage, where most of the story takes place. This is an unusual mission for Barrabas, in that only a portion of his squad is tasked to a mission, and on top of that it is not the standard job by any means. The deposed dictator of the Island plans to return to power and Barrabas is there as a sort of assistance. The rest of the SOBs however, are not forgotten, and soon they all play an important role as the plot develops. Excellent storytelling as the plot threads are weaved together, and some good action thrown in for good measure. Both Barrabas's group and O'Toole's have terrific adventures on the Island. It was amusing having the fat Jessup along for the ride What makes this book even better were the scenes with the senator. The scheming villain he has been is taken to a whole new level, but the ending scenes are quite surprising regarding this character. I also liked how Barrabas discovered that the rest of his gang was on the island, it was great. There is so much to this book, it is in every was a super version of a terrific SOBs adventure. Too bad there were only five of these.

Once again like the previous title by this author he manages to squeeze so much into the available 350 pages without any padding at all. A deposed dictator living in asylum in the United States wishes to return to his country and retake power and with a mountain of incriminating evidence has more than enough blackmail material to force the Senator in assisting him with his plans. Never one to be placed in a position like this the wily Senator decides it is the perfect time to dispose of not only the Dictator but also the hated Barrabas and his bunch of SOB's. The plan is put in motion and it seems as though nothing can stop it from being successful until Barrabas starts to become aware what is actually going on and what is going to occur on the island where it is time to take matters into his own hands and turn around the plot to his own favour. Excellent actions scenes abound throughout the title and some truly memorable characters are introduced. I loved the finish which was a little surprising but very fitting. Certainly one to recommend here which is unfortunately the last title by this author in this series.

This one was like the first Super, pretty good read, with enough action, but it didn't knock my socks off. And part of that cover art was from one of the early 100 Mack Bolan's. What's up with that??
